Adidas è un po' la storia dell'abbiagliamento e degli articoli sportivi. Nonostante il successo, i fratelli Adolf e Rudolf Dassler, che grazie alla sponsorizzazione di Jesse Owens durante le Olimpiadi del 1936 vendettero più di 200.000 paia di scarpe in un anno, separarono le loro strade e diedero vita il primo all'Adidas, ed il secondo alla Puma nel 1947. Ma la scalata verso il successo continuò.
In molti sostengono che il nome Adidas sia l'acronimo di All Day I Dream About Soccer (Sogno il calcio tutto il giorno), ma il nome in realtà è estrapolato dalle iniziali dell'ideatore, quindi Adi(olf)-Das(sler).
In seguito ad una forte crisi negli anni '70 e 80', la società fu acquistata dall'imprenditore fancese Bernard Tapie nel 1989 per la cifre di €243.918.000 ma i guai finanziari portarono Tapie a vendere nel 1992 al Crédit Lyonnais, banca con la quale aveva contratto forti debiti.
Negli anni '90 l'Adidas si è rinforzata, anche grazie ad una serie di acquisizioni, tra cui Reebok, che hanno permesso maggior competitività nei confronti di Nike, il rivale numero uno.
Adidas risiede in Germania ma ha molte sedi sparse per il mondo, tra cui Hong Kong, Toronto, Taiwan, Inghilterra, Giappone, Australia e Spagna.
Le produzioni riguardano accessori per la corsa, il calcio, il basket, il tennis, il golf, il cricket, il rugby (chi non ricorda le magliette degli All Black?), la ginnastica e lo skateboard.
