La storia di Colgate comincia nel 1906 quando Henry W. Colgate decise di aprire uno stabilimento atto alla produzione di amido, sapone e candele a New York chiamandola "William Colgate & Company".
Dal 1840 al 1908 l'azienda commercializza saponi, ed il primo dentifricio in pasta in tubi.
Nel 1928 avviene la fusione con Palmolive, così chiamata per la produzione di sapone con estratti dall'olio d'oliva e di palma e durante l'epoca delle soap opera, il marchio Colgate-Palmolive compete con Procter & Gamble per la sponsorizzazione di queste.
