Nel 1943 IKEA viene fondata da Ingvar Kamprad, il quale a 17 anni ricevette un premio dal padre per il suo impegno nello studio e lo usò per dar vita alla sua attività. All'inizio Ikea vendeva penne, portafogli, cornici, orologi, gioielli, calze di nylon e altri prodotti a basso prezzo. Negli anni cinquanta Ikea apre la sua prima esposizione di mobili ad Älmhult, negli anni sessanta apre in Norvegia mentre negli anni settanta apre in Germania, Svizzera, Australia, Canada, Austria e nei Paesi Bassi.
Ikea inizia inoltre a disegnare i suoi mobili e a confezionarli in pacchi piatti, permettendo così un notevole risparmio e un contenimento dei costi. Ikea ha fatturato 21,2 miliardi di euro nel 2008.
Ikea entrò nel mercato italiano aprendo un primo punto vendita a Cinisello Balsamo presso Milano nel 1989, attualmente (2008) vi sono 15 punti vendita aperti lungo la penisola (due a Milano, due a Roma, Ancona, Bari, Bologna, Brescia, Firenze, Genova, Napoli, Padova, Parma, Rimini e Torino), a conferma di una strategia di espansione del gruppo e del positivo riscontro economico con il mercato italiano.
