La Mazda viene fondata nel 1920 a Hiroshima da Juiro Matsuda. La produzione comincia nel 1932 con l'autocarro a tre ruote Mazda-Go mentre il logo fa la sua apparizione per la prima volta nel 1934.
Risale invece al 1960 la produzione della prima vettura, La nostra prima vettura, la R360, una due porte; la prima quattro porte è la Mazda Carol che viene prodotta a partire dal 1962.
La particolarità della Mazda è il motore rotativo assemblato per la prima volta sul modello Cosmo Sports 110S, questo motore rappresenterà un fiore all'occhiello per la casa giapponese.
Dagli anni '70 ad oggi si susseguono una serie di successi tra i quali anche una vittoria alla 24 ore di Le Mans eduna partnership con Ford.
