La casa automobilista di Stoccarda fu fondata nel 1912 dalla Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft e dal 1926 si fuse con la Benz per dare vita alla Daimler-Benz e mutare il marchio in Mercedes-Benz.
Il nome Mercedes deriva Mercedes Jellinek, figlia del console generale austroungarico Emil Jellinek, uomo d'affari con una forte passione per le auto che, acquistò ben 34 auto della casa di Stoccarda ed entrò a far parte del vertice decisionale viste le sue idee (che portarono alla costruzione di vetture sportive dal baricentro basso e carreggiate larghe) ed il suo fiuto per il commercio.
La prima Daimler a nome Mercedes fu la 35PS nata nel 1901.
I modelli odierni sono divisi in classi mentre precedentemente da 3 cifre che rappresentavano la cilindrata.
La Classe A, sia 3 che 5 porte è una piccola monovolume. La Classe B, anch'essa monovolume è leggermente più grande della Classe A.
La Classe C è invece la berlina a tre volumi, anche in versione station vagon. La E è la classe del modello di punta prodotta anche come station wagon, coupè e cabriolet.
Le altre classi sono la S, la CLS, la R e le CL, CLK, SL ed SLK che comprendono cabriolet e roadster.
